Personality:
At first glance, Yosuke's a bundle of energy and silliness wrapped up in a pair of ever-present headphones. Under this exterior, however, lies a loyal, determined person who has fought through a lot to stand by his friends. In the tarot symbolism present in his game series, Yosuke's associated with the Magician Arcana: a card which represents force and action. Following this theme, he's a very active and dynamic person, who's been the instigating and driving force behind a lot of the work his team have done - investigating murders and solving mysteries, neither of which has been a walk in the park.
Under normal circumstances, he's a great person to have on your side. While he might complain frequently, Yosuke will freely go to hell and back for his friends. He'll make an effort to get on with anyone, too - he's almost more likely to complain at his friends, in fact, than he is at his enemies! He’s the sort of person who’ll try and help no matter the situation, even when the person asking for help doesn’t entirely deserve it. It takes a lot to make him hate someone: even hearing that the girl he had a crush on before her death hated him didn't make him think any less of her, and he goes out of his way to defend her to people in future. He likes knowing that he can be of use to those around him. While he doesn't always think before he speaks or acts - in fact, being quite likely to put his foot in it when he does talk - and isn't much of an outright scholar, this isn't to say that he's stupid. He's bright enough to be the one who's come up with a lot of his group's plans.
That isn't to say that he's an entirely wonderful person, though. Far from it. He's got a lot of issues lurking under the surface, and in his game, a lot of these are brought up very directly. While he's worked past a lot of the worst of it, there are still a lot of unpleasant factors that colour his personality. As a city boy who's been moved to a small town against his will, and as someone who often gets blamed for the effect his father's department store has had on the local small businesses, he's had a lot to be resentful of…
While it's something he's getting past, thanks to a manifestation of his darker side, it's known that he's got a wide selfish and jealous streak. He's frustrated with being pushed around and pushed aside, and often wants to lash out at the narrow-minded people around him. He tends towards being envious of the abilities of others, even though he'll be happy for them at the same time. And while he might have been the one to start investigating the murders in his hometown, it was at least partly out of a personal drive to investigate the exciting new world and its potential, to do something interesting with his life, rather than an entirely pure hearted motive. He wants to be important! However, as time goes on, he does accept his more second-in-command role in his group.
His most unfortunate quality, and one that's brought up in relation to some of his friendships, is a nasty measure of discomfort and confusion about homosexual relationships. He's the sort to panic when put in a situation where they're brought up, and has made a number of offensive comments regarding a friend of his's sexuality, though out of confusion and ignorance rather than any active malice. However, this is at least something he appears to be working past: he's at least seen as comfortable enough with his masculinity to cross-dress for an event in game, and his earlier accusations aren't repeated with such venom later. (He's even seen wearing pink in an epilogue scene.)
Whatever problems Yosuke has, he's someone who's at least ready to work past them and move on with life. After all, the Magician is only the first card in the Fool's Journey. He's got a long way to go.
Skills and Abilities:
Yosuke's smarter than he looks, so to speak! While he might never have been an academic, he's a quick thinker (when he bothers *to* think!), and good at coming up with plans. Physically, he's quick and agile, and in relatively good shape. He's competent in hand-to-hand combat, preferring to wield knives.
While he can't directly use magic in the classical sense, he does have some paranormal abilities, in the form of his 'Persona'. This is a guardian being summoned from his heart and soul, part of his psyche: it takes the form of a person clad in blue with flaming hair. Through it, he can use a number of wind spells and stronger physical attacks than otherwise, and it provides him with an extra boost to his speed in combat.
First Person Sample:
Okay, guys. I've got a problem. Yeah, yeah, we've all heard the story about me falling into the trashcan that time: but that was an accident, okay? ... Maybe a couple of accidents. Whatever.
But still! It wasn't a big deal!
Someone leaving trashcans outside my door? That's a big deal. It was funny the first time but it's starting to get kind of old. So does anyone have any idea who the hell's doing this? It's really starting to get on my nerves.
Details? It started about a week after I moved into this new place, right? I mean, I know news gets around fast but that's just being ridiculous! Who else apart from our group even knows that it happened in the first place? And that's kind of what's getting to me. I know you guys wouldn't do it... so someone else found out. And they're using it as an excuse for a prank.
I hope it's just a prank anyway... otherwise this is just creepy.
...Have I actually fallen into them again? What? Geez! Why're you asking me that?
Third Person Sample:
So - giant birds were the new horses, it seemed. Yosuke'd heard of the creatures, of course, but this was the first time that he'd ever seen one in the flesh. Or in the feathers. This was going to be great! A free riding lesson? Since when was fate ever so kind to Yosuke Hanamura?
Despite the excitement inside him, he couldn't help but being a bit nervous. Still, there was no use in being scared of the thing, was there? It was just a great big canary. He'd seen worse a million times - gods, demons, his inner self. This thing was tame, it was trained, it was standing there with a saddle on its back waiting for him - where was the problem?
And so, gingerly, he reached out, an awkward smile on his face. "Hey, buddy," he started, giving it a rub on the beak. A positive start, at least - it made a faint noise, poking back at him. Alright. He just had to climb aboard - right. Got it. With that, he set off, a wide smile on his face.
For a while, at least, things seemed like they were going well. Wind in his hair, the rhythmic thudding of the bird's feet underneath him: this wasn't bad! Honestly, he could get to like this. Maybe he'd have to come back here in future, get out, see the sights. With that in mind, he gently steered it up a hill, into a woodland - as much as he'd still not call himself a true fan of the countryside, this was a pleasant scene, wasn't it? A relaxing one, at the very least. After a moment's thought, he spurred the bird on, speeding it up, running through the forest happily.
Still. It was an unfamiliar scene, and Yosuke wasn't quite aware of the dangers afoot. The first he knew about the hole in the path was when his bird squawked, stumbled, threw its head down in an attempt to keep its balance. Never mind its passenger… it knew where it wanted to go. Home. And it wasn't going to let this human get in the way...
Yosuke'd become nothing but a bystander. Grabbing wildly for the reins, all he managed to come away with was a handful of feathers. The bird's gentle gait had become a jarring up his spine. This wasn't going his way at all! Yelling in panic, all he seemed to be doing was spurring it on to further flight - or what passed as it, here. Problematic people, he'd always been able to deal with. Keep a smile on his face and power through, they'd never notice a thing. Problematic birds? No, there was no way he was going to be able to sweet talk it down.
He'd lost control. The new environment that had seemed so full of promise now seemed to hold nothing but obstacles was rapidly turning into a lush wooded hell. What was he supposed to do?
"No, no - don't you dare - agh!"
While his mount charged off down the path, Yosuke found himself knocked clean to the ground. He groaned, lying motionless, waiting for his body to respond with something that didn't hurt.
Exploring would have to come another day.
